Bed Bugs Ride Home With You: A Traveller's Prevention Guide
Bed bugs don't come from dirt — they come from luggage, cabs, PGs and hotels. How to check a room in 2 minutes, protect your bags, and what to do if you've already been bitten.
The most common thing we hear on bed bug calls: "But my house is spotless!" It's true — and irrelevant. Bed bugs don't care about hygiene. They care about blood and hiding spots, and they get into your home the same way you do: through the front door, usually inside a bag.
How infestations actually start
In our Bangalore case files, the overwhelming majority of infestations trace back to:
- Travel — hotels, trains, buses; bugs climb into luggage and clothing.
- PGs and shared accommodation — the single biggest source in areas like Marathahalli and Electronic City, where tenant turnover keeps reintroducing them.
- Second-hand furniture — that bargain sofa or mattress may include residents.
- Visitors' luggage — awkward but true.
The 2-minute hotel room check
Before unpacking anywhere you'll sleep:
- Put your luggage in the bathroom — hard floors, no hiding spots.
- Pull back the sheet at the head corner of the mattress and check the seam and piping for rust-coloured spotting (dried blood specks), tiny white eggs, or live bugs the size of an apple seed.
- Check the headboard edge — the #1 harbourage in hotels.
- Glance at the sofa seams if the room has one.
Spotting evidence? Ask for a different room — not the adjacent one (infestations spread through walls).
Coming home from a trip
- Unpack directly into the washing machine; wash and dry on the hottest safe setting. Heat is the one thing bed bugs cannot survive.
- Hard-shell luggage: wipe down. Fabric luggage: sun it on the terrace for an afternoon — Bangalore sun works.
- Don't store suitcases under the bed.
Already getting bitten?
Look for these confirmations before assuming mosquitoes:
- Bites in lines or clusters of 2–3, often on arms and shoulders.
- Rust spotting on sheets or mattress seams.
- A sweet, musty odour in heavy infestations.
- Cast skins (translucent shells) in cot joints.
Why DIY treatment fails — every time
Bed bug eggs are cemented into crevices and are resistant to almost every retail spray. A single surviving female restarts the infestation within weeks. What works is a professional two-round protocol: a first treatment to eliminate active bugs, and a second 10–15 days later timed to kill nymphs as they hatch — before they can breed. One-visit treatments, professional or DIY, are why bed bugs "keep coming back."
Our bed bug treatment includes both rounds and a 45-day warranty. If you're waking up with bites, don't wait — every week of delay roughly doubles the treatment area.
