Dengue Season in Bangalore: A Practical Mosquito Defence Plan
Aedes mosquitoes breed inside your own premises, not just the lake down the road. A room-by-room, terrace-to-sump plan to cut dengue risk before the monsoon peaks.
Every June-to-October, Bangalore's dengue numbers climb — and every year, the same misconception makes it worse: "the mosquitoes come from the lake." Lakes breed nuisance mosquitoes (Culex), but the dengue carrier — Aedes aegypti — breeds in small collections of clean water, almost always within 100 metres of where it bites. Usually inside your own compound.
Know your enemy's habits
Aedes mosquitoes are day-biters, most active in early morning and late afternoon. They're weak fliers with black-and-white striped legs, and they lay eggs just above the waterline of small containers. Those eggs survive drying for months and hatch when refilled — which is why "I emptied it last month" doesn't help.
The breeding-spot audit (do this monthly)
Walk your home with this list. Every dengue prevention program we run starts exactly here:
- Plant saucers and self-watering pots — the #1 urban breeding site. Empty and scrub weekly (eggs stick to the sides).
- Refrigerator drip trays and AC drain trays — forgotten and perfect.
- Terrace clutter — buckets, paint tins, tyres, tarpaulin folds, blocked terrace drains.
- Sump and overhead tank lids — must close fully; a finger-width gap is enough.
- Water storage drums — cover tightly or empty and refill weekly.
- Curing water on construction sites next door — report it; this is a BBMP-actionable violation and a genuine community risk.
Protection layers that actually work
In rough order of effectiveness:
- Source elimination (above) — nothing else comes close.
- Window screening — physical exclusion works day and night, forever.
- Larviciding — for water that can't be drained (sumps, fountains), growth-regulator larvicides stop larvae maturing. Safe for non-target life at label doses.
- Indoor residual treatment — Aedes rest on walls, under furniture and behind curtains between bites; treating these surfaces kills them where they hide.
- Fogging — instant knockdown of adults, best at dusk. Useful during outbreaks and for events, but without steps 1–4 the effect lasts days, not weeks.
Repellent creams and vaporisers have their place — but they protect a person or a room for hours, not a household for a season.
For apartments and communities
High-rise living doesn't exempt you: Aedes breeds in podium planters, basement sump rooms, and clogged shaft drains, then rides the lift lobby air right up the tower. Communities near the lake belts — Bellandur, Hebbal, Sarjapur Road — see the heaviest pressure and benefit most from a structured monthly program: common-area larviciding, dusk fogging and shaft treatment, with a report after each visit.
