The Bangalore Monsoon Pest-Proofing Checklist (Do This in May)

Every year, our call volume jumps 40% in the two weeks after Bangalore's first proper monsoon downpour. Flooded burrows push rodents indoors, saturated soil sends termites climbing, drains back up and deliver cockroaches, and ant colonies relocate straight into wall voids. Almost all of it is preventable — in about 90 minutes, one weekend before the rains.

The checklist

Drains and wet areas (30 minutes)

• Fit stainless mesh covers on all floor drains — bathrooms, utility, balcony. This single ₹100-per-drain fix blocks the American cockroach superhighway.
• Pour boiling water down little-used drains weekly through the season; stagnant traps are breeding chambers.
• Check the trap under each sink — a dried-out or broken U-trap is an open door from the sewer.

The building envelope (30 minutes)

• Walk the external walls and seal gaps around pipes, cables and AC conduits with cement or steel wool + sealant. A rat needs only a 2 cm gap; a mouse, half that.
• Check door bottoms — daylight visible under a door is an invitation. Fit rubber door sweeps, especially on the utility and terrace doors.
• Inspect window screens for tears before mosquito season peaks.

Terrace and compound (20 minutes)

• Clear terrace drains of leaves and sediment now, not during the first storm.
• Remove or invert anything that holds water — pots, tins, tyres, tarpaulins. (This is your dengue defence too.)
• Trim branches touching the building — they're bridges for ants and rodents.
• Move firewood, cartons and clutter off the ground and away from walls; ground-contact storage is termite bait.

Inside (10 minutes)

• Elevate stored items in lofts onto shelves; cardboard directly on loft floors becomes nesting material.
• Transfer staples into airtight containers — monsoon humidity also wakes up stored-product insects in flour and grains.
• Check under sinks with a torch for early cockroach spotting (pepper-like dots) so you can act before the population explodes.

What to book professionally before the rains

• Termite inspection if your home is ground-floor, older than 10 years, or in a high-moisture layout like HSR or garden-heavy Yelahanka — monsoon is when colonies expand fastest.
• A general pest treatment in late May puts a residual barrier on skirtings and entry points exactly when insects start moving indoors.
• Mosquito program for lakeside homes — larviciding before the water bodies fill beats fogging after.

The one mistake to avoid

Don't wait for the first sighting. By the time a rat crosses your kitchen or termite wings pile up on the windowsill, the monsoon influx has already settled in — and you're booking a cure instead of prevention, at cure prices.
