7 Termite Warning Signs Every Bangalore Homeowner Should Know
Termites cause lakhs in silent damage before most owners notice. Learn the seven early signs — mud tubes, hollow wood, swarmers — and what to do about each.
Termites don't announce themselves. By the time most Bangalore homeowners discover them, they've been feeding for months — sometimes years. The average termite repair bill we see runs into lakhs, yet every one of those cases showed early signs that were missed. Here are the seven that matter.
1. Mud tubes on walls
The single most reliable sign. Subterranean termites build pencil-width mud tunnels from the soil up walls, along skirting, and across foundations to reach wood while staying moist and hidden. Check your compound wall base, staircase edges, and behind furniture that hasn't moved in months.
Test it: break a small section. If it's rebuilt within a few days, the colony is active.
2. Hollow-sounding wood
Termites eat wood from the inside out, leaving a thin veneer intact. Tap door frames, window frames and wardrobe panels with a screwdriver handle — healthy wood sounds solid; infested wood sounds papery and hollow.
3. Doors and windows that suddenly stick
Termite feeding and the moisture they carry warps frames. If a door that closed fine last season now jams, don't just plane it down — inspect it.
4. Winged swarmers after rain
Those flying insects mobbing your lights after Bangalore's pre-monsoon showers? If they shed wings in little piles on windowsills, they may be termite alates leaving a mature colony to start new ones — possibly from inside your own walls. Ants swarm too, so check: termites have straight antennae and equal-length wings; ants have elbowed antennae and unequal wings.
5. Powder or frass near woodwork
Fine powder below wardrobes or door frames can indicate either drywood termites or wood borers. Either way, it means something is actively eating that wood.
6. Bubbling or blistered paint
Termites bring moisture into walls and woodwork. Paint that bubbles, blisters or ripples with no plumbing leak nearby deserves investigation — we've opened many "damp patches" to find live galleries behind them.
7. Sagging floors or hollow laminate
Wooden and laminate flooring over concrete is a favourite target, especially in ground-floor flats. Sections that click, sink slightly, or sound different underfoot should be checked.
